Big Basket of Pitches!

Hello there, (in obi-wan’s voice)

I woke up with high hopes of a sunny day, but, alas, don't let these clouds gloom you. Instead, make a blanket out of them, tuck in, and sleep - only after you're done with pitches 🥁.

For those who don't know me, I'm Saumya, your photo editor for this year. I'm in my third year studying International Relations. I tend to yap too much at times, so feel free to stop me whenever you wish.

Announcements

  • Photo section meetings will take place every Monday from 2-3 pm, starting next week (September 16th). We will have photowalks, workshops, and more!
    Location: Nest 2208

  • Every Friday at 4 pm, we will have our general meeting at The Ubyssey. Drop by if you want to learn more about us and how to get involved in the newspaper!

  • My office hours for this term will be on Mondays from 12-2 p.m. and on Fridays from 11-1 p.m. If you have any questions regarding the photo section, feel free to reach out!

First time contributing? Start here!

1. Check out these guides to the Ubyssey photo section and what makes a good photo.

2. To claim a pitch, reply to this email and wait for confirmation from me that it's still available.

3. If you need to borrow a camera, let me know when you sign up for a pitch.

4. Take as many photos as you think fit the assignment, then select the best 5–10. Feel free to use editing software as needed (and let me know if you need Lightroom access).

5. Send photos in JPG format and make sure each file is between 1–3MB.

6. Name the photos as follows: YYYYMMDD_first initial_last name_pitch_file number (e.g., 20210908 i falsetti sky train 1)

7. For coverage of people and events, please provide a brief caption to go alongside each photo.

8. Email photos in a folder to [email protected]. If sharing via Google Drive, please make sure I have access!

Photo pitches

Please send in all photos by 11am on the deadline (unless the event you are covering is happening that day). If you need to borrow a camera, let me know when you sign up for a pitch.

News

  1. A writer is working on a piece about Mugshare, a business partner of the AMS partnering with Blue Chip in its new location. Take a photo that shows the new screens at Blue Chips advertising the Mugshare product or simply capture Mugshare with Blue Chip in the background. Deadline September 16th

  2. Take a photo of a student picking up a single book from an empty bookshelf for an article about poor communication between bookstore and professor.
    Deadline September 17th

Sports - Recaps

These games require coverage at specific times and locations. The angle of the photo should be more in action pictures instead of still pictures.

  1. Men's soccer game at Thunderbird Stadium on Saturday at 7 p.m.
    Deadline 16th September.

  2. Women’s soccer game at Thunderbird Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m.

  3. Deadline 17th September.

  4. A photo of homecoming banner on main mall, right beside the UBC fountain.
    Deadline 17th September.
