Announcements

  • Our next photo section meeting is on the 23rd (Monday) 2-3 p.m, where we’ll be going through ‘Photography at The Ubyssey 101’.

  • We have lots of sports events coming up. If you’re interested, then this will be your opportunity to gain hands-on-exposure to sports photography.

  • My office hours for this term will be on Mondays from 12-2 p.m. and on Fridays from 11-1 p.m. If you have any questions regarding the photo section, feel free to reach out!

First time contributing? Start here!

1. Check out these guides to the Ubyssey photo section and what makes a good photo.

2. To claim a pitch, reply to this email and wait for confirmation from me that it's still available.

3. If you need to borrow a camera, let me know when you sign up for a pitch.

4. Take as many photos as you think fit the assignment, then select the best 5–10. Feel free to use editing software as needed (and let me know if you need Lightroom access).

5. Send photos in JPG format and make sure each file is between 1–3MB.

6. Name the photos as follows: YYYYMMDD_first initial_last name_pitch_file number (e.g., 20210908 i falsetti sky train 1)

7. For coverage of people and events, please provide a brief caption to go alongside each photo.

8. Email photos in a folder to [email protected]. If sharing via Google Drive, please make sure I have access!

Please send in all photos by 12pm on the deadline (unless the event you are covering is happening that day). If you need to borrow a camera, let me know when you sign up for a pitch.

News

  1. There is climate strike on Friday in downtown - September 20th (this friday).
    Time: 1pm - 4pm (full schedule here)
    Location: Vancouver City Hall to Vancouver Art Gallery
    Deadline: 23rd September 

  2. A writer is working on a piece about the new childcare centre in Brock South Commons. A photo of the building from outside or simply a photo of the sign that indicates where childcare centre is. Deadline: 20th September (Friday)

Features

These pitches are for creative non-fiction articles. You can be creative or email me when you pick up a pitch if you wanna get an idea of how it should be like.

  1. A writer is writing a piece about moving away from home for university and the changes they've made to how they stay positive and balance academics and mental health with the help of their friends. Be creative and do your magic! Deadline: 27th September

  2. A photo that displays prioritizing female friendships and working through self-forgiveness. Be creative and do your magic! Deadline: 27th September

Sports

These games require coverage at specific times and locations. The angle of the photo should be more in action pictures instead of still pictures.

  1. Women’s soccer game on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Thunderbird Stadium.

    Angle: standard recap, action-focused. Deadline: 23rd September

  2. Women’s rugby game on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Gerald McGavin Centre.
