Hello there (in obi-wan’s voice),

I hope you all are enjoying the last days of us actually seeing the sun. Not to scare you, but shit is about to get real.

Besides all this drama I create on newsletter, I really want to take a moment and appreciate all of you for all the work you guys do. You all are not just great photographers but GREAT JOURNALISTS in-making!

  • PENDER BENDER!!
    What even is Pender? Every year The Ubyssey hosts a retreat to Pender Island where we book a huge house and have the time of our lives. Want a midterm break? This will be a great option for you to sit back and relax (and maybe go on hikes with us). We only have 5 more spots left! Make sure they are yours before time runs out! Everything that you need to know about Pender is here!

  • Our next Photo Section meeting is on 21st October from 2-3 p.m.

  • Every Friday at 4 p.m., we have our general meeting at The Ubyssey. Drop by if you want to learn more about us and how to get involved in the newspaper!

First time contributing? Start here!

1. Check out these guides to the Ubyssey photo section and what makes a good photo.

2. To claim a pitch, reply to this email and wait for confirmation from me that it's still available.

3. If you need to borrow a camera, let me know when you sign up for a pitch.

4. Take as many photos as you think fit the assignment, then select the best 5–10. Feel free to use editing software as needed (and let me know if you need Lightroom access).

5. Send photos in JPG format and make sure each file is between 1–3MB.

6. Name the photos as follows: YYYYMMDD_first initial_last name_pitch_file number (e.g., 20210908 i falsetti sky train 1)

7. For coverage of people and events, please provide a brief caption to go alongside each photo.

8. Email photos in a folder to [email protected]. If sharing via Google Drive, please make sure I have access!

Photo pitches

Please send in all photos by 12 p.m. on the deadline (unless the event you are covering is happening that day). If you need to borrow a camera, let me know when you sign up for a pitch.

Sports

These games require coverage at specific times and locations. The angle of the photo should be more in action pictures instead of still pictures.

  1. A writer is working on a profile of the Pickleball club. A photo of people playing pickleball. Deadline: October 21st

  2. Football game this Friday in Thunderbird Stadium at 6 p.m.
    Angle : Standard action-focused
    Deadline: October 21st

  3. Women’s hockey game this Saturday in Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre against the Trinity Western University. This game is at 3 p.m.
    Angle : Standard action-focused
    Deadline : October 21st

News

  1. A photo of UBC card in front of the Blue Chip logo. Information on the card will be blurred when published. Deadline: October 22nd
